Today in writing, we spent time working on pieces we had already started. In math, we took our mid-chapter check on adding. We read Goldie Locks and the Three Libearians and talked about our library sorting system. We also read The Gym Teacher from the Black Lagoon and talk about story elements and compared it to the other Black Lagoon stories we have read. We also continued working on learning our procedures for our reading routine including “read to self” and “listening to reading.”

Today in writing, we brainstormed a list of ‘things we know about.’ We used this list during writing workshop to help us come up with ideas of what we could write about. In math, we reviewed counting on to add and adding doubles. We also did our first day of math rotations. In reading, we read The Teacher from the Black Lagoon and charted the story elements. We also read Those Shoes and learned how to pick a book that is ‘just right’ for us. Later, we read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? and talked about being bucket fillers. A bucket filler is a person that make other people feel good by saying nice things or even just a smile. We talked about not being bucket dippers which tear other people down.
Today in writer’s workshop, we read What Do Authors Do? and each wrote a story. In math, we practiced adding doubles such as 2 + 2 or 9 + 9. We also read Do Unto Otters and talked about how we should treat each other. We also practiced our Read to Self time and played “Find Someone Who.”
Check out the scrapbook of the students in our class. We have had a great start to the school year. Please make sure you check this blog often for announcements and our daily happenings.
Wow…the summer has flown by and a new school year is quickly approaching! I hope everyone enjoyed every minute of their vacation and is excited to welcome a new school year. I know that I am excited to meet each one of my new students and get to know each of their unique personalities. Meet the teacher is this Thursday, August 19th. I hope everyone gets a chance to come and meet me and see their new ‘home.’ As you enter our new room, you’ll see that I LOVE the Wizard of Oz and since our classroom will be your home away from home, make sure to remember….”There’s No Place Like Home!” I’ll see you soon!

This week in writing we have been working on writing our own Important Book. To begin this we read The Important Book. In reading, we are working on Leo Lionni books and working on identifying story elements. In math, we have been working on geometry and identifying two and three-dimensional objects. In science, we have been reviewing space before our field trip to Sci-Port next week.
Today in reading, we read Dear Deer and reviewed homophones. We also played a race car game to review homophones and Julian came in first place. In writing, we were given another classmate’s wordless picture book story and began writing the words to go along with it. In math, we practiced writing number words to the hundreds place and reviewed writing numbers in expanded form. We also had character education today.
Today in reading, we read The Quilt Story to continue our study of Tomie dePaola books. We wrote a literature response on ‘quilting’ paper and will soon begin to piece together our quilt. In writing, we finished writing the words to Pancakes for Breakfast which is a wordless picture story. When then created our own wordless picture stories. In math, we reviewed writing numbers in expanded form to the hundreds place. In science, we continued talking about our environment since this week is Earth Day. Today we learned about renewable and nonrenewable resources. The deadline to turn in your Spring picture orders has been extended. So, make sure you send that to school as soon as possible if you wish to order.
