Today in writing, we continued to discuss leads.  We also extended the story that we began writing together and then worked on our own stories.  During word work we work on long vowel sounds using a Mimio lesson.  We even got to play Long A sound Memory.  In math we began counting on to add two digit numbers.  Math is getting a bit tougher so we need to make sure we are working hard.

Today in writing, we began writing a spooky story.  We brainstormed Halloween adjectives.  We also talked about starting our stories with a strong lead.  In math, we began adding tens.  Two digit addition is a little tougher so it is important that we keep practicing our addition facts.  In reading, we read Pumpkin Soup and talked about the life cycle of a pumpkin.  We also learned about sequencing.  In science, we are beginning to talk about safety.  We read Officer Buckle and Gloria and learned about the importance of safety rules.

Parent Conferences

On the letter that went home on Friday, there was an error in the address to book your conference.  If you sent your letter back today, I already booked your conference and your child is bringing your time home in their planner.  If you haven’t booked yet, here is the corrected address…sorry about the confusion.

Today in writing we began talking about adjectives.  We watched a short Brainpop video on adjectives and brainstormed a list of strong adjectives.  In writing workshop we really tried to incorporate those words in our writing.  In math we reviewed patterns.  We will be having a test tomorrow.  Students math homework tonight should prepare them for their test.  Today we went to the library and checked out new books.  We go to the library every Thursday, so it is important that we remember to bring back our library books on that day.

Today in writing, we reviewed verbs and created a class verb book.  We read Slide, Slurp, Scratch, and Burp which is a book about verbs.  We also made a focus web on pets and wrote a story together about a time a dog tore up the inside of a house.  We really focused on adding details and good words.  In math, we practiced putting numbers in order using a number line.  Our vocabulary words that we worked on in math were number line, between, before, and after.  We began a unit in social studies about our country.  We watched a quick Brainpop video about US symbols.  Students also received a Scholastic News article titled Our Flag.  They are to read this tonight and record it on their reading logs.  Make sure to study your spelling words tonight for a test tomorrow.

Let me start by saying WOO HOO because Sonic funded our Ipods and they should be coming in the mail soon!!  In language arts, we reviewed nouns and looked for nouns within a paragraph.  In writing, we talked about organizing our stories and the importance of putting the beginning first, then the middle, and then the end.  Otherwise, our stories might not make sense. In math we reviewed adding and subtracting numbers.  In reading, we read Rox a Boxen and talked about using our imagination to visualize what is happening in stories.

Wow…this week seemed to fly by.  In writing, we have been reviewing nouns and today we played a race car game about nouns.  Everyone had a blast with that!  In writing, we continued to learn about focusing in on what we are writing about to create a clear picture in our reader’s head.  In math, we are continuing with subtraction.  We will have our chapter test on subtraction next week.  During reading, we read Harry, The Dirty Dog and worked on making connections to the text without ‘wandering’ to far off. 🙂  In science, we have continued our unit on weather. Don’t forget that Saturday is White Oak’s Monster Truck Rally!  It will be a wonderful time!  Also, mark on your calendars that on September 27 we will have a parent orientation to talk about how things work in second grade.
